Superior Schools change health insurance provider – Superior Telegram

Date:

SUPERIOR — The Superior School District will be changing health insurance providers starting July 1.

The school board approved an administrative recommendation to change carriers after the district was notified its current health insurance carrier, WEA Trust, is going out of business at the end of the year.

WCA Group Health Trust will be the district’s new health insurance carrier after the board approved the switch Monday, June 13.

In April, the school board voted to stay with WEA Trust to provide consistency for employees despite a slightly higher cost.

“We could have stayed with them through Dec. 31, but we had concerns in regard to what kind of service they were going to be able to offer us for the next six months,” said Shannon Grindell, director of business services for the school district. “We know they’ve already terminated 10 employees, so I was worried that we would get to September, October and we wouldn’t have the same level of service that we have right now.”

After officials were notified, Grindell said they reached out to their broker to discuss options. The broker went back to the companies that bid on the school district’s health insurance in March.

“Group Health Trust said they would honor the bid they gave us in March, which was 3% less than WEA had given us, and they would move us with very minimal disruption,” Grindell said.

Employees will be moved by electronic transfer so they wouldn’t be required to fill out additional paperwork, Grindell added. A disruption analysis revealed that 99.5% of the coverage was the same, and Grindell said WCA would reach out to individuals directly to address changes that may affect them.

In other business, the board approved an updated

student code of conduct.
