The University of Nevada, Reno released the contract and salary for its new athletic director a day after announcing Stephanie Rempe was hired. The 5-year contract through June 2027 tops the new hire’s salary at over $500,000 annually.
Rempe, who was the second over athletics at Louisiana State University, will be paid a base salary of $400,000, the same as her predecessor, Doug Knuth, who was ousted in April.
But Rempe’s compensation is considerably more than Knuth’s and could easily top $500,000 or more, according to her contract, obtained by the RGJ in a public records request.
Additional compensation includes a $75,000 annual media and public appearance fee which is at the discretion of UNR’s president; a $30,000 annual housing allowance; and bonuses for academic and athletic performances of the football and men’s basketball teams. She also is eligible for $15,000 annually if just over half of the total number of student athletes graduate.
She is set to start on July 18. Her contract also awards her a one-time payment of $25,000 due within 15 days of starting the job.
Like Knuth, she also will receive benefits: a car, money for out-of-pocket expenses and season tickets for all sports.
The 18-page contract is dated June 22, a day after Rempe was introduced at Mackay Stadium. The contract is signed by UNR President Brian Sandoval, UNR’s general counsel and Rempe.
Rempe was making $437,000 a year as the second in command in athletics at LSU.
